The "Idiot Index"

Musk's metric for inefficiency: the ratio of a finished product's cost to its raw-material cost.

The “Idiot Index” is Musk’s term for the ratio between the cost of the finished product and the cost of its raw materials. Any ratio above 2 signals significant room for improvement.

The battery example. When Musk approached EV battery packs with first principles, he broke the cost down to its raw materials: cobalt, nickel, aluminum, carbon, and a polymer separator with a steel can. At commodity prices on the London Metal Exchange, those materials cost roughly $80/kWh. Industry battery pack pricing at the time was ~$600/kWh, an idiot index of ~7.5. That gap was the opportunity: not a manufacturing mystery, just unexploited physics.

In practice. Musk applies the same lens to rockets, tunnel boring, and satellite internet, calculating what raw materials “should” cost, then engineering backward to close the gap. When the ratio between finished-product cost and raw-material cost is high, the culprit is almost always unnecessary complexity or conventional process, not physical limits.

The goal isn’t to reach raw-material cost (overhead, labor, and yield losses are real); it’s to make the ratio visible, name it, and treat any multiple above 2 as an indictment of the process rather than an inevitability.
